Rumble strips Powder Mill Rd, Beltsville

Rumble strips Powder Mill Rd, Beltsville

They have increased the number of rumble strips along Powder Mill rd between Entomology Rd and Research rd.  Earlier this week it looked like they were leaving the shoulders un-rumbled but I was just told they included the shoulder on some of the strips.  I'll check it out soon.

Not only do many of the strips extend into the shoulder but they now extend almost to BW Parway.  If there is a curve on Powder Mill rd then there WILL be rumble strips. Bummer as this is a nice ride through the Belts Agric center.

Re: Rumble strips Powder Mill Rd, Beltsville

My biggest problem with rumble strips is not that they are there, but that cars sometimes park on the shoulder (i.e., for yard sales) creating a hazard for cyclists having to cross over the rumble strip to enter the road to go around the car(s), then ride over the rumble strip, again, to get back on to the shoulder.

I crossed a rumble strip on the Chesapeake Ramble where one of the raised teeth had cracked away, leaving the two "holes" joined together. Tested the old carbon seatpost on that one.

I wonder how they will be with winter rains and ice on the dark AM commute.  On the upside you can hear the cars behind you and those approaching in the distance.

You should be able to hear the cars, anyway, unless you're blasting your eardrums with K0Rn or Led Zep or...  You DO NOT want to hear the cars on the rumble strip--means they've drifted into the shoulder.

If there's any chance of ice, I'll surely have the studs on. Luckily, for me, I don't have any rumble strips (yet) during my commute to work.

I said on the UPSIDE I will hear cars.  Meaning that it is good.  Shoulders have the rumble strips as well so that's a wash.

Re: Rumble strips Powder Mill Rd, Beltsville

Our voices have been heard.  The USDA is currently removing the rumble strips that extend into the shoulders.  Unfortunately this means that the entire shoulder is currently being dug up and filled with blacktop.  You must be really careful. You must take the lane!!! Cars on this stretch of PM go in excess of 60 mph.
So if you called and complained pat yourself on the back.  Charlie
