Cancelling rides

Cancelling rides

I'd like to get some feedback from experienced ride leaders.   This morning I cancelled a ride based on information from the  a weather forecasting site website.  The ride did goon  as I received a call from one of the riders who was already at the ride start.

My questions are these:
What website do ride leaders use for weather forecasts?
Under what conditions would you cancel a ride.

Re: Cancelling rides

Joan, go with what your gut tells you. I probably wouldn't of cancelled because even though the roads were wet they should have been dry by 9. I watch Ch 11 or 13 & look @ the radar & sometimes go on there websites & watch the radar & make my decision. You should make your decision by 7 but if your not sure you can post that you will be @ the ride start & if the weather doesn't look good you may cancel.

Re: Cancelling rides

Hi Joan
At one time, the club default for cancelling a ride was a rain chance of greater than 60% and/or winds in excess of 20 mph. The weather over the past week, which had a lot of "scattered thunderstorms" and which is very typical for summer,  reveals the difficulty with the default standard. If the weather forecast is so iffy such that you would never consider doing a ride on your own, then cancel the ride. There will always be some members who will ride no matter what the weather is ( "there is no bad weather, only bad equipment"!); but your sense of what an enjoyable ride should be is as honest as theirs.
