Looks like the best weather day of the week.

Nice, moderately hilly ride on some seldom-biked roads with snack stop at Jiffy Mart on Rt. 97. Ride is a 7.1 (avg rating) on the world famous MT 1-10 scale (10,000 ft for every 100 miles). Leader will have paper cue sheets for those who need them..  Ride is also in BBC cue sheet library.

marktabb@yahoo.com Comedy of errors, My chain has been falling on the front inside for a few weeks now. I always consider that if it happens only once a ride, it is operator error but twice or more, the front derailleur screw needs to be adjusted (1/8 turn).

So, right before the midway stop, my shifting was poor. I figured the cable was ready to break. Then I noticed a ticking sound and saw one of the chain pins was sticking out. Jim M. had a chain tool (I do not carry one since I have only broken one chain in a gazillion miles) (I broke many tandem chains which is not unusual). I carry many different multi-speed master links so I should have changed it at lunch. But I figured I would just ride the last 17 miles with a tick-no biggie?. Of course the shifting and bent link was getting so bad, I could not pedal anymore since the bent chain would not get through the derailleurs. I had ten miles to go and gave Ellen my keys to pick me up. While waiting, I got the pin back in and figured I would shorten her ride picking me up. Of course the chain got so screwed up and bent that it finally feel off the bike with 7.5 miles to go. At this point, Jim was gone and I had no chain tool to fix it by putting on a master link (I tried to get the remaining pin out with my screwdriver and rock). Ellen tried calling me but my phone watch didn't ring because I only get calls from my existing contacts (I forgot that it only goes into voice mail). To make a long story a little shorter, I coordinated Ed Cahill at work with Ellen H. to pick me up. I owe her big.

Just put on a new chain and hopefully it matches up to the old $400 retail price D/A rear derailleur on my short ride tomorrow. It did match up on the repair stand but that is only phase one, as most of you bike geeks out there know. Working on the road is another story!
