Man sentenced for Kalamazoo crash that killed 5 bicyclists in June 2016

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - A man involved in a 2016 crash that killed five bicyclists and injured four others in southwestern Michigan has been sentenced to 35-55 years in prison with 734 days credit.

Charles Pickett, 52, was found guilty on five counts of second-degree murder, five counts of operating while intoxicated causing death and four counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.

Pickett was accused of driving under the influence of drugs and plowing into a group of bicyclists in Cooper Township on June 7, 2016. His girlfriend told police he downed handfuls of pain pills and muscle relaxers before driving.

He received five separate sentences, one for each cyclist killed, to be served concurrently.

Pickett apologized before he was sentenced Monday morning.

“I’ll live with this the rest of my life. I would give my life for the people I murdered, killed and maimed and I just want to say I’m sorry,” he said, wiping away tears.

Pickett’s lawyer argued the evidence established, at most, the elements of reckless driving causing death.

Tom, I think there is something wrong with your camera. All the images of me make me look fat.

Russell,

Thank you. If he is one of their regular mechanics I may know him.

Thanks again,

Vintage English bike in need of maintenence
Category: Technical

I recently acquired a 1973 Raleigh three speed. It had been stored in a garage for 30+ years. Squirted some oil on it, inflated the tires and rode it around Lake Montebello a bunch of times. Decided to do some real maintenance and found the nut and bolt wrench sizes are not SAE or Metric but some obsolete British Standard Whitworth. So, does anybody know of anyone in the Baltimore area who might still have tools/experience?

Thank you

Almost nailed a cyclist at 5:45am on Walther blvd. I had just made a left onto the southbound lane. Here's a cyclist going the wrong way in the bike lane! With a dim light, dressed in black, on a black bike, drifting (he was going downhill) but staring at the pavement.

Never saw him until he was five feet away.

When I made the left, I'm sure I swayed into the bike lane. if this was two seconds later, My truck and his bike would have been occupying the same space.

Sorry, if this is not the proper place to post. But it's been bothering me since it happened.

Fellow cyclists, please be careful.

Sad, just going on a bike ride and getting killed.

It was a good turn out today. A lot of news cameras. It should be on at the 10pm news.

Bike theft is and always has been a problem. So lock up with more than one lock. But the worst part (and I have seen this) is catching someone and proving it is your bike. So I have return address labels (with clear plastic tape over them) in odd places. Also have my soundex number engraved.

Love to see a sting operation.
