Scotsman looking to hire a bike in Baltimore

Scotsman looking to hire a bike in Baltimore

Hello BBC,
I live and ride in Scotland but am heading over to Baltimore in a few weeks and am very keen to get about and explore your part of the world by bike . I am wondering where best I can hire a good bike for a week in Baltimore (4th Sept - 11th sept approx). Doesn't need to be anything fancy , just a lightweight, solid mile eater. I'll be bringing my own pedals, shoes and helmet etc. I am thinking that as well as exploring Baltimore I might take a train some way west and explore West Virginia - any tips on this gratefully received. Skyline Highway looks like it would be an amazing ride. It would also be great to hook up with some of you for a chain-gang ride or somesuch during my stay.
Well thanks for reading and safe cycling

Re: Scotsman looking to hire a bike in Baltimore

Hi Tom
I have included three URLs for bike shops in the Baltimore area that advertise bike rentals.
RacePace bikes: http://racepacebicycles.com/about/rentals-pg377.htm
Light Street cycles: http://lightstcycles.com/about-us/servi … ent-bikes/
Baltimore Bicycle Works: http://www.baltimorebicycleworks.com/rentals/
As for riding in our area, Baltimore County is quite nice (and hilly). To travel to Skyline Drive or West VA, I am afraid there is no real reliable train service; we just drive. Skyline Drive is a favorite for many of us. The BBC had an organized ride in the Autumn from Front Royal VA to Warrenton VA and back the next day making it a twin century ride. The US Park Service halted the tour for fear of accidents; the Sky Line Drive is very congested in the Autumn with "Leafers" enjoying the color of the trees. In September there should be no problems.
As for West VA, riding in the Harpers Ferry area is a favorite; be careful of the major roads, the area has increased in population and the roads are congested at the end of the work day.
Since you found our website, I might suggest that you spend $20 for a one year BBC membership. By being a member, you will have access to our cue sheet library which has rides from 30 miles to 200 miles in a 50+ mile radius of Baltimore. Our ride schedule is available to anyone. The cue sheet library option does not show on our web site unless you are logged in as a member. The other large bike club in the Baltimore Washington area is the Potomac Peddlers Touring Club (PPTC) : http://www.potomacpedalers.org/? They also have an extensive library of rides and a very active ride schedule.
I hope you have a good time cycling in our area. Those of us who have traveled outside of Baltimore have found that cycling in our "backyard" has prepared us for cycling anywhere. For me that has included the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, the Appalachians in Md, Pennsylvania,  Virginia, Tennessee, the mountains in Oregon and Northern California, the hills in Tuscany and the foot hills of the Pyrenees in southern France.

Re: Scotsman looking to hire a bike in Baltimore

Greetings from across the pond,
If you happen to ride a 52 cm bike. I have a (spare) circa 1999 Trek 5200 you could use free of charge during your trip to B-more :-)
I'm looking forward to hearing more about your trip , & ,perhaps riding with you.
Cheers,
Carl

Re: Scotsman looking to hire a bike in Baltimore

Guys, thank you so much for your friendly and helpful responses.
I am scanning maps feverishly, excited to be able to explore your part of the world and ride some new roads.
'Leafers' are a new one to me! Here in Scotland we suffer from' twitchers' (bird spotters) all year round!
Carl, I have PMed you.
Thanks again,
Tom
