Please do visit the site and more importantly the link to voice your concerns.  In short, there is talk of preventing cycling access to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Re: Blue Ridge Parkway: Closed to Cyclists?

Wow!
If this came to pass, I would be extremely upset.

I make the 2 hr drive down to Skyline Drive about 3-4 times per year to enjoy a long day of climbing and descents. Without fail (almost...) I see the most obnoxious thing I can imagine chugging up the hills -- a Rock Star size touring bus pulling...... a Chevy Suburban!  Just in case they need to have something small to drive around town (sarcasm).

I also wonder what would become of big rides like The Assault on Mt Mitchell, Bridge to Bridge, etc that use the Parkway. I will pass this  along to the many clubs in SC, NC, TN and VA. Thanks, Robert

Re: Blue Ridge Parkway: Closed to Cyclists?

Bicyclists should click on the link and let the Park Service know that we want the Blue Ridge Parkway to continue as a full service road, open to bicyclists.  As traffic volumes increase, and more people drive large RV's, the Park Service should have the flexibility to widen the lanes and/or add paved shoulders to keep the Parkway safe for everyone.

Designating the Parkway as a National Historic Landmark may preclude the Park Service from doing needed modernization.  Promoting the driving experience may be interpreted as  Driving receives priority over other ways to travel, like bicycling; and consequently the number of bicyclists permitted to use the Parkway should be limited to maximixe the driving experience..  It's best to include bicyclists in the planned Parkway users.  Your comments to the Park Service will be most helpful.

The comment period for the Blue Ridge Parkway proposal ends on Friday, December 16.  So if you want to respond don't delay.
