Sad News: Active Long Time BBC Member Bob Carson Has Died

Sad News: Active Long Time BBC Member Bob Carson Has Died

Bob Carson passed away last Friday.  Bob was a long time BBC Member, and for many years Bob was the Event Leader of Kent County Spring Fling.  Bob also volunteered in the Civil War Century.  His work ranged from leading Loy's Station Rest Stop to marking the route.  Bob was in the BBC Hall of Fame.

Bob had a great sense of humor, and liked to mention that he was born in 1934, the same year the Mountain Club was founded.  Whenever someone complained about a ride being too difficult, Bob  would mention how much harder things were in the old days, like the  self contained camping trip from Missoula, MT to Jasper, AB that he, the late Wayne Rogers, and I did in 1981. But Bob mellowed as the years passed.  When a group of BBC members planned what was to be a self contained cycling trip from Seattle to SF, Bob convinced Mike Jenkins to drive to Seattle to carry our food and cooking gear.  Bob was also a founding member of the Baltimore Seniors.  He will be missed.

Re: Sad News: Active Long Time BBC Member Bob Carson Has Died

RIP Bob! Bob also ran the 1984 Gear Rally at tTowson State University for the BBC. This was a wonderful weekend long event with 1700 participants who enjoyed rides (up to the 100+) mile century from Towson to Gettysburg, workshops, guest speakers, entertainment, meals, and more. In his later years, Bob did a great job of heading up the Kent County Spring Fling! Bob was a wealth of knowledge about all things BBC and bicycling. He was BBC president and worked on the CWC route markings. Bob also worked for cycling at the national level with the League of American Bicyclists. We were so thankful to see and speak with him at the BBC awards dinner last November.  Mike and Evie

RIP Bob, The BBC has lost a very long time great member. I joined in 76 and he was a member before that. Back in the 70's and 80's the club used to do Skyline Drive as a Twin Century from Ft Royal to Waynesboro Sat and back on Sunday. Bob who used to be a teacher back then would bring some of his students with him to also do it. We will miss you Bob.

So long, Bob.  I didn't know him well, but I remember his work from CAM tours.  Here's an old article which happens to be from my first CAM: https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xp … story.html

Re: Sad News: Active Long Time BBC Member Bob Carson Has Died

All,

This is hard to write.

Bob will be missed. I have only known Bob for a relatively short 10 years. He was incredibly friendly and welcoming when I started cycling with the casual/senior rides. He was always there, he would always recognized me, ask how I was doing, just wonderful, truly welcoming. He was a true experienced cyclist and I a total novice. (Doubt he ever remembered my name. But that's a guy thing).

:-)

During those rides, at lunch and post ride I would prod (and prod) and he would tell a story or offer advice. He'd tell how he was an organizer in the cycling across the USA craze in the '70's and how they would send notices in advance to the next towns and how they would be welcomed. And numerous other cycling, canoeing, skiing(?) things he was doing or had done. I loved the first person history.

To me he was an elder statesman of the BBC.

Thank you Bob for being you.

And again, Bob you will be missed.
