Greencastle Great Escape Weekend

June 10-12, 2022

The Eighth Annual Greencastle Great Escape Weekend was held in early June.  As usual about 25 people pre-registered and most of them drove out to Franklin County, PA to bike on Friday.  Some riders were fortunate to observe a newly born buffalo calf take its first faltering steps toward its mom and have its first meal.

But Mother Nature didn’t smile on us this year for the rest of the weekend.  With rain in the forecast and then actually falling from the skies on Saturday morning, only 8 hardy riders pedaled out from Antrim Township Community Park in the afternoon for a 37 mile ride.  On Sunday a group of 8 cyclists enjoyed biking in the gently rolling landscape of the Cumberland Valley.

Thanks to Phil Manger for organizing this event for our club.

July 2022 BBC Picnic

In mid-July about 150 bicyclists gathered at Taneytown Memorial Park for our club’s annual bike ride and picnic.  Participants could choose between four routes with lengths of 27, 36, 48, or 60 miles.  Some of us got caught in a brief rain shower but we were almost dried out before arriving back at the park.  This picnic was our first single day event of 2022 and it was a wonderful opportunity for many of us to see friends who ride in different categories.

Thanks to Bill Blankenship who coordinated the event again this year, with assistance from Kate Farber and Mary Ryan.

BBC 2021 Volunteer Recognition

Each year we recognize all of our volunteers including ride leaders, event coordinators, and club organizers. Without their efforts our club could not function. Unfortunately, due to rising covid rates at the beginning of the winter, for the second year in a row, we were not able to host our end-of-year banquet in person.

The 2021 Awards Banquet program lists our annual activities and our important volunteers. It also identifies all of the recipients of our special awards listed here with the 2021 award recipients:

The Wayne Rogers award is presented to: Eugene Bayer!

Gene has led the most rides in a given year in BBC history; in 2020 Gene led 91 rides and in 2021 he led 96 rides

The Barbara Park award is presented to: Lydia Cunningham! Last season Lydia stepped up and led the Thursday rides for most of the season, missing only a few weeks. These rides started in the Elkridge area and were a staple for the Thursday night selection.

The Hall of Fame award is presented to: Bob Roswell! Bob has made a great many contributions to the BBC over many years. System Source hosts the BBC website, and several board meetings have been held at System Source.

Many thanks to all of our valuable volunteers.

Note: The Awards Banquet Program can be viewed on the BBC website on the Member Menu/Member Recognition page.
