RIDE DESCRIPTIONS  (subject to change):

These rides are primarily on flat terrain.  You will cycle on paved roads in rural Maryland and Delaware through farmland and natural wetland areas, as well as a few residential areas and small towns.  There are stores for food and water on each route.

Century (101 miles):  This route was changed in 2014 to avoid going through Chesapeake City.

Route heads east into Delaware, then turns south along the Delaware River wetlands to Port Penn and Leipsic.  Turning west, the route pauses briefly for a lunch stop in Cheswold, then passes through Kenton and Hartley and back into Maryland.  The final leg returns north through Millington, Sassafras, and Warwick and back to Chesapeake City.  Lunch is available at several convenience stores near the midpoint of the route.  Please note:  Before lunch there is a 40-mile section with no stores, so be sure to carry plenty of water.

3/4 Century (77 miles):  Route heads south through Warwick and Sassafras to Millington before turning northeast into Delaware.  After passing through Blackbird State Forest, enjoy lunch in Townsend, DE, before re-joining the century route and continuing north along the Delaware River wetlands to Port Penn.  The final leg returns west along the C&D Canal back to Chesapeake City.

Metric Century (101 kilometers / 63 miles):  After passing through Chesapeake City, this route heads east along the C&D Canal into Delaware, then turns south along the Delaware River wetlands to Port Penn.  After the lunch stop in Townsend, DE, the route returns to Chesapeake City via Sassafras, MD and Warwick, MD.

Half Century (54 miles):  Follows the metric century route for the first 35 miles to the lunch stop in Townsend, DE.  The route returns northwest through Middletown and back to Chesapeake City.  If you can do 25 miles in hilly Baltimore County, you should be able to do this relatively flat 54-mile ride.

35-mile Ride:  Ride to historic Odessa, DE.  Optional tours of historic buildings are available.  Food is available at two convenience stores at along the route.  This route is appropriate for experienced Casual and 10-mph riders.

BBC's 37th ANNUAL INSTRUCTIONAL CYCLING SERIES

Due to the uncertain conditions this year caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, everything that follows is tentative and subject to change.  Please check back at this BBC website for any changes and updates.

The BALTIMORE BICYCLING CLUB'S very popular Instructional Cycling Series will begin with a virtual orientation to be held via Zoom on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 10:30 a.m.  Pre-registration is required in order to receive the Zoom invitation.

This series is offered to anyone over 16 years of age interested in learning the basic skills of cycling, including doing minor road repairs and improving as a rider.  For new riders, we can help you find your best riding level and develop so you can ride on the BBC casual rides by the end of the series.  Experienced riders can meet other BBC members and learn about group riding.  The cycling series will cover both road and recreational trail riding.  And we do have something for faster riders, athletes and charity riders wanting to work on their gearing, cycling techniques and road skills.  We will be maintaining an email list and will use this list to communicate any last-minute instructions.

At the beginning of each ride as well as during any group rest breaks any non-fully-vaccinated participant must wear a mask properly covering their mouth and nose and practice physical distancing.  We will be breaking into small groups for the actual rides.

ORIENTATION– Sunday, May 16, 2021 – Zoom Virtual Session at 10:30 a.m.  During the orientation, we will discuss cycling skills and techniques, bicycles, equipment and clothing and answer any questions about the program.  We will watch a short, informative video on cycling safety and bike handling.

RIDE SCHEDULE– (Note that all rides start at 10:00 a.m., not 10:30)

Sunday, May 23    B&A Trail/BWI Loop from Marley Station Mall.

NOVICES RIDE! Before this ride, we will demonstrate cycling skills which we will practice on the large parking lot. More experienced riders may join us, but should realize our emphasis will be on helping the newcomers.

Sunday, June 6    First Road Ride from Greenspring Station

Sunday, June 13  Second Road Ride from Greenspring Station

Sunday, June 27  Third Road Ride from Manor Center in Jacksonville

Sunday, July 11  Fourth Road Ride from Manor Center in Jacksonville

QUESTIONS–

What kind of bike will I need?  Begin with any bike in reasonably sound condition.  Do not buy a new bike yet; we can help you decide what style and size of bike is right for you.

What is the cost of the instructional orientation and cycling series?  The entire program is FREE. It is open to both club and non-club riders.  BBC membership is not required.  Bring a friend!
