Indian Steps Ride for May 1--Update (View Route on MapMyRide.com)

Hi All
I will not have time to drive or ride the route before May 1. The cue sheet in the Cue Library dates from 1997; I last rode it in 2006-7. This makes the route fairly old and unused. I did, however, map the route on MapMyRide.com . The URL for the route is : http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-st … 053853585. As far as MapMyRide.com is concerned, the route still holds.
For those not aware of MapMyRide.com, the website has a "Fly-by" feature that allows you to see the route as a fly over. The Fly-by feature is as current as Google Earth can make it.
If anyone in the club has done Indian Steps more recently and knows of any significant changes to the  route that is not on the club cue sheet, please let me know.
Thanks,
Ed Cahill

The last time I went up Indian Steps was 3/14/2009 during this ride:

The road was gravel covered (stuff similar to what's on the NCR rail-trail) and I hit 9-16% grades going up. I had to stay seated, riding road tires, or the rear tire would start to spin out.

It's probably a good idea that you let riders go down the road, first, to see what they're getting themselves into when they come back up. If they decide they don't want to come back up, they can ride the paved portion back to SR 425 from the museum and pick up the route at mile 34 of your map.

I'd caution going down. There could be some deep gravel sections that could easily wash out a front wheel--not good if you're coming down a 16% grade at the time.

Here's the interactive GPS map I recorded for the ride rendered using Google:

http://bimactive.com/ba/ui/route_detail … teID=27763

2011 mileage=17,344 miles;2012 mileage=11,414 miles; 2013 mileage=12,169 miles; 2014 mileage=5,156 miles; 2015  mileage=6,200 miles; 2016 mileage=17,503 miles; 2017 mileage=4,454 miles;2018 mileage=6,749 miles;2019 mileage=4,139 miles;

Is there a alternate way around the gravel sections, especially at 16% up or down?

Re: Indian Steps Ride for May 1--Update (View Route on MapMyRide.com)

Hi All
I read Isaias account of his ride along Indian Steps road. It appears that he did the entire loop back to Rt 425. Jim Guild's Indian Steps cue sheet has us doubling back to Rt 425 the way we come in avoiding the gravel part of the road (now I know why he had us go back the way we came in). I don't remember riding on a gravel road on this route. See the map on MapMyRide.com.  http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-st … 053853585.

When I did it, it looked like this (where the purple lined road is paved and the very top of the ridge is paved):

There's a house at the top of the ridge if you are coming up the hill. The gravel becomes pavement just before that house.

So, it sounds to me like you need to make the right on to Indian Steps at the bottom of SR 425 by the islands not from the ridge, then ride the paved road to the museum.

Re: Indian Steps Ride for May 1--Update (View Route on MapMyRide.com)

Hi All
Isaias is correct in his last post about gravel on Indian Steps Road. So I emailed Jim Guild, the BBC member who developed this ride, about the route. I have corrected the MapMyRide.com map---  http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/md/ma … 463245791.  (Indian Steps- Revised)
The detour down to the museum starts at mile 31-- not mile 29 as is shown on my original map. Going to the museum starting at mile 31 avoids the gravel part of Indian Steps Road. My memory is pretty shot these days, but I did not remember any gravel roads on this ride.
Sorry for any confusion.
