PA 216 between Glenville and Smoketown has bridge out detour

PA 216 between Glenville and Smoketown has bridge out detour

I tried to ad lib, on today's 5 Towns/5 Valleys ride, the Smoketown/Pentland to Jefferson route and was turned back by a total bridge out on PA 216 between Glenville and Smoketown.
Anyone planning on leading any of the Seven Valleys rides will need an alternate route to go around the detour.

Ed, wouldn't taking a right on Stone Church before tracks and then left onto Main, then left again onto Creamery back to Rt 216 after the tracks work.

No. The bridge is just after the return to PA 216. Also the bridge is totally gone at this time with no way to cross it on foot.
I walked down the RR tracks to see if I could ford the stream further up. No luck.

There is a cuesheet for 7T7V using Blue Hills for when Rt216 is closed which would work. Blue Hill version from 2009 when last time a bridge closed Smoketown Rd.  Adds some climbing instead of the fast roll on Glenville.

Seems like Stone Bridge to Creamery should work.

Replace Three Bridges in Southwestern York County

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced 03/19/2018 that on Monday, April 2, weather permitting, its contractor will close the bridge on Route 216 over the Codorus Creek near the Village of Brodbecks at the Codorus-Manheim Township Line in southwestern York County and begin demolition work in preparation to remove and replace the existing 89-year-old structurally deficient bridge. This section of Route 216, locally known as Blooming Grove Road, averages 3,700 vehicles traveled daily.

PennDOT advises motorists that Route 216 will be closed to through traffic between Smoketown Road and Stone Church Road for up to 203 days while the bridge is replaced.

Until then, a detour which follows Manheim Road and Glenville Road is available for motorists. Milling and paving work may be conducted after the bridge is opened to traffic under short-term single-lane alternating traffic patterns.

Re: PA 216 between Glenville and Smoketown has bridge out detour

I don't know the other roads in the area. On the map, it looks like a left on Mannheim from Glenville after Hokes and then right to PA 216 and then a left onto Smoketown Rd seems shorter. Is Mannheim a steep climb?
The other way would be PA 216 to right on Stone Church, then left onto Miller, left onto Watertank, then right back on Smoketown. Jim has a ride that goes up Miller but goes right on Watertank not left back to Smoketown.
Anyone know what these roads are like?

The 2nd option, Miller Rd doesn't go to Watertank, you would have to go upto Rt 516and make a left, then left onto Watertank. But first option after you make the left onto Manheim then instead of right onto 216, cross 216 onto Skyview, right onto Trone down to Smoketown. This way would be less traffic.

If you were making up a detour, which route would like to ride?

Re: PA 216 between Glenville and Smoketown has bridge out detour

I favor Steve Zeldin's SEVEN VALLEYS VIA BLUE HILL.  I used to ride to Codorus and took Blue Hill Rd north from Linesboro.  Steve's approach picks up Route 216 from the west near Codorus, avoiding the missing bridge.  Be sure to take both the cue sheet and map.

There are ways to offset the extra climbing via the Blue Hill Route.  I personally like to start from the Manchester P & R and keep things simple by going north on Route 30 and turning right into the residential street that connects with Linesboro Road.Entering Linesboro, One should watch carefully for Blue Hill Rd, which will now be a left from Linesboro Rd.  You will be heading north on Blue Hill.  I follow the Bluehill route all the way to Spooks Hill Rd.  Instead of turning left onto Spooks Hill, I continue straight on Beckeysville Rd through the Prettyboy watershed. Shortly after crossing Falls Rd (RT 25), I turn right onto Brick Store Rd and then turn left onto Maple Rd back to Hanover Pike.  I then turn right on Hanover Pike for about a mile, back to the P & R on the left opposite the Sheetz store.  My easier route is just over 50 miles and avoids having to cross Pretty Boy Dam.
