Rayville and Dairy
Forum: Road Problems

Typical tar & chip is to lay down the stone over tar, let the sun and car tires set the stone into the tar, then sweep/vacuum the loose stone after approximately a month to make the road more serviceable.  That said, recent tar & chip seem to be laying down too much chip and Dairy Road is pretty scary even using brakes the whole way down, also sliding my car sideways at low speed in one of the hairpins and particularly scary in the steep section.  Baltimore County Bureau of Highways, 410-887-3560 can be contacted regarding County roads.  Please give them a call.  There are a few roads that have been overdone lately, and its so late in the season, there won't be a lot of hot sun softening the pavement to get the stone to set.  I think the really cold winter is responsible for so many roads deteriorating that the County is doing full depth paving on the worst roads and tar & chip on the ones only needed some repair.  The shady spots have been the worst where all the potholes and broken paving are, and riding from bright sun to deep shade has had its surprises this year.

Tour around the Finger Lakes of New York

Gene Young and I are registered to ride the Bon Ton Roulet, a seven day loop around the Finger Lakes.  We've done it a few years before and it was very well run with beautiful riding, spectacular views, waterfalls, good rest stops and nice places to stay.  Just throwing it out there in case anyone is interested in joining us for the week.  The middle of July in upstate New York makes for great riding weather.

Happy trails,

"To get on a bike is to get hold of the landscape." - Paul Fournel, 'Need for the Bike'

The ride start time for the Oregon Ridge two Fifty Milers is 9 am at the Oregon Ridge Lodge Parking Lot.  It was pointed out to me that it's listed as 12 am and the website won't allow editing from a cell phone.

See you there?  Dan Artley in Parkton

This is a fairly hilly ride, one goes through Pretty Boy Reservoir but on Monday won't have a food stop. The one that bypasses the reservoir you can get something to eat at Michael's in Hereford.  We'll choose which ride at the start.  Water will be available, but be prepared to be self sufficient. The cue sheet(s) are available in the cue directory under this title, but still refer to the Painted Pig or La Cucina.  I'll bring Cue sheets too.  It's a 13/15 paced ride, but I'll be leading it closer to 12 mph.   Hope you can join me on this short notice.

Community Asked to Help Develop Protection Plan for Loch Raven North Watershed
Category: Social
Forum: Advocacy

FYI
Wednesday, March 11, 2015, 6:30 to 8 p.m
Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability (EPS) and the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy will host a community meeting to present the draft Small Watershed Action Plan (SWAP) for the Loch Raven North watershed. The planning area includes much of northern Baltimore County (Freeland, Parkton, White Hall, Hereford and Sparks).

There will be presentations on community involvement in environmental restoration by Dan Doerfer (Middle River resident) and deer management by Don Outen (EPS, Sustainability and Forest Management). Community input is integral to the plan, which will guide restoration efforts in the watershed to improve stream health and reservoir water quality.

Looking for volunteers for the BBC's table

Stop at the BBC Table to say hello while you're at the Stop Swap and Save.  Should be a good turnout to see friends with the nice weather.

Looking for volunteers for the BBC's table

I'm organizing the BBC's table for the Westminster Stop, Swap and Save on Sunday, February 8 from 9am to 2pm.  It's a good place to find bike stuff at reasonable prices and a great way to see biking friends that you haven't seen lately because of weather.  Please contact me if you'd like to help out at the BBC's table to help promote the benefits of riding with our club.  And let me know if there's a time that may best work out for you.  If you can't volunteer and still make it to the swap, stop by and say hello.

Bike Maryland and Bikemore are Advocating Separate Paths instead of Proper Bikelanes
Category: Social
Forum: Advocacy

Bikemore and Bike Maryland have a history of promoting all forms of bikeways and bike transportation if you read their blog on a regular basis.  I'm actually a fan of the Jones Falls and Gwynn's Falls Bike Paths and their ability to provide a safe way for cyclists/non-cyclists to go through Baltimore in a somewhat car free manner.  The more cyclists we get out there the more aware drivers become.  Baltimore's expensive parking promotes bike travel for transportation, and all those destinations will never be completely covered by separate bike lanes.  Separate bike lanes may not be the BBC's agenda, but these advocacy groups are promoting biking in all forms.  I think it's a good thing and that there is safety in numbers.

Happy trails,
