The charges are in with regard to Bishop Cook: Vehicular Manslaughter, Texting While Driving, DUI and Leaving The Scene of an Accident.

I read where the manslaughter charge can be tough to prove. Apparently, the state's attorney's office has strong evidence to back it up. I wonder if this will be a plea bargain deal or full-length trial. Stay tuned.

A moving show of solidarity. Many thanks to the folks who helped organize it.

I find it remarkable that Bishop Cook has yet to be charged with anything. Don't you?

You're right, it could have been any one of us. It's tragic events like this that drive home how random life can be. Do we really have control of our lives? Or is our path from cradle to grave dictated largely by forces beyond our control, some seen, others not?

Off topic maybe, but thoughts worth pondering in light of Mr. Palermo's terrible misfortune.

What happened to Tom Palermo makes me ponder what and why things happen generally.

Providence. Cause and effect. Confluence of events. God's will. All of the above. None of the above. Take your pick. If Bishop Cook hadn't been impaired (assuming she was), Tom would most likely be alive. He'd also be alive if he had taken a different route or arrived at the 5700 block of Roland a few seconds earlier or later.

Which begs the question: How much control do we have over what happens to us? Tom did everything right (helmet, bike lane, etc), yet still got nailed because of forces beyond his control, and possibly beyond the control of Bishop Cook, though in no way am I absolving her of responsibility for what happened.

Question of the Day:

Is there irony in a woman of God driving like this? No, the faithful might say; we're all sinners.

A frame builder, same as another Tom and frame builder killed in 2005, Tom Bruni. Eerie coincidence.

The Baltimore Sun reported this morning on a rider (Thomas Palermo) killed yesterday in the 5700 block of Roland Avenue. Palermo was using the south-bound bike lane on Roland when he was hit, apparently from behind. The driver, a 57-year old woman, initially fled the scene, then returned. Her Subaru station wagon's windshield was badly cracked.

Who among us doesn't think that next time it could be us? We can usually avoid potential accidents involving cars in front and on our flanks (if we're careful). It's the cars coming up from behind that pose the most potential for disaster. Fortunately, most motorists respect our rights to the road (if they didn't there'd be a lot more accidents). It's the ones that don't, like that woman in her Subaru, that I worry about. The sure solution is to give up road riding (at least 2 people I know did because of their angst regarding traffic) and stick to the trails. The other, which is no solution at all, is to hope our number never comes up.

If I had a group weekday ride after work, I'd leave everything in the car, bike included, and leave my car in a parking garage. Theft was still be a risk factor but much less of one (less visibility). I would never, especially around here, leave my bike in the car unattended. Thieves would get to it before the sun or heat could damage it.
