The afternoon of June 17, 1905 found the 5pm Blue Mountain Express bound for Penn Mar from Baltimore running on a new schedule. Meanwhile a freight pulled by two large steam locomotives hauling coal left Westminster. The regular passenger train from Baltimore was still on schedule. The Freight pulled to the Tannery siding allowing the Blue Mountain Express to pass and then reentered the main line. NOT knowing that the regular passenger train was on the track. From a witness:
"Whether there was a mixup of orders or orders were not heeded, the passenger and the freight train met together at Lawndale, about 8 miles east of Westminster, between Patapsco and Cederhurst (now known as Finksburg). This area is also known as the "Water Tank" and "Ransom". ... We could hardly see the wreck because of all the steam. ... The whole bottom just west of the Patasco River was strewn with wreckage and bodies and people crying for help." 28 people were killed.
